The Haymarket, a 400-foot capitol tower, a very good zoo-sized park system and one enormous stadium.

Lincoln is an hour down I-80 from Omaha and makes a genuinely good weekend on its own: a restored warehouse district you can walk end to end, an art-deco capitol that is one of the best buildings in the country, and a college-town food scene that's cheaper than it has any right to be.

1. The Nebraska State Capitol

Free, open daily, and unlike any other statehouse in America — a 400-foot art-deco tower instead of a dome. Take the elevator to the 14th-floor observation deck for the best view in the city, then look up at the mosaic ceilings on the way out. Budget an hour.

2. The Historic Haymarket

Brick warehouses turned into restaurants, bars, galleries and a Saturday farmers market (May–October). It is the default answer for dinner, drinks and a wander, and it is directly next to Pinnacle Bank Arena.

3. Sunken Gardens

Free, small, and one of the prettiest public gardens in the Plains. Best from late June through September. Twenty minutes, and it pairs well with a drive out to Holmes Lake.

4. Memorial Stadium and the university campus

On a home Saturday, Memorial Stadium becomes the third-largest population center in Nebraska. Even off-season, the campus walk plus the Nebraska State Museum's mammoth hall is a solid hour.

5–10. The rest of the shortlist

  • Sheldon Museum of Art — free, striking building, excellent American collection.
  • Lincoln Children's Zoo — the right size for young kids, right in the city.
  • Pioneers Park Nature Center — free trails, bison and elk ten minutes from downtown.
  • Jamaica North / MoPac trails — Lincoln's trail network is one of the best in the country for a rental bike.
  • Museum of American Speed — an unexpectedly great car museum for anyone who likes engines.
  • Saturday Haymarket Farmers' Market — May through October, mornings only.

Pairing it with Omaha

The two cities are an hour apart, so plenty of people do Lincoln on Saturday and Omaha on Sunday. If you only have one night, sleep in whichever city has the event you care about and drive the other.
