Lincoln Game Day Guide: Husker Weekends, Hotels and Where to Watch

Seven or eight Saturdays a year, Lincoln stops being a mid-size state capital and becomes the biggest thing happening in Nebraska. If you're coming for a home game — or accidentally booked a trip on one — here's how the day actually runs.

When to arrive

Come Friday. The Haymarket on a Friday night before a home game is the best part of the weekend, and driving in Saturday morning means sitting in traffic on I-80 with everyone else.

Where to stay

• Haymarket / downtown — walk to the stadium in ten minutes. Most expensive, entirely worth it once.
• North Lincoln / airport corridor — cheaper, ten-minute drive, easy exit Sunday morning.
• Omaha — an hour away and often half the price on game weekends. Plenty of fans do this.
• Lincoln's south side hotels — quiet, family-friendly, and near the interstate for a fast getaway.

Parking and getting to the stadium

City garages downtown open early and are the simplest option; lots near the stadium are mostly permit-only. Park once, walk everything, and don't plan on driving between kickoff and an hour after the final whistle.

Tailgating, without knowing anyone

The Railyard — an open-air plaza in the Haymarket with a giant screen — is the default for fans without tickets or tailgate invitations. Get there two hours before kickoff for a spot with a view.

Watching without a ticket

Every bar in the Haymarket shows the game and most have no cover. It is a genuinely good way to experience the day for the price of lunch, and you'll get a table if you show up ninety minutes early.

Sunday

Sleep in, eat downtown, and drive the hour to Omaha for the afternoon rather than fighting the eastbound rush right after breakfast.
