Des Moines is small enough that nowhere is truly far from anywhere, but the neighborhood you book still decides whether you walk your weekend or drive it. Here's the honest breakdown.

Downtown — best for business and events

The convention center, Court Avenue bars and the sculpture park are all inside a ten-minute walk, and the enclosed skywalk system means January doesn't ruin the trip. Expect roughly $130–$210 a night, with hard spikes during big events at Wells Fargo Arena.

East Village — best for food, bars and a first visit

Fewer big-brand hotels, more character, and the best block-for-block dining in Iowa right outside the door. You're a fifteen-minute walk from downtown proper and directly under the capitol.

West Des Moines — best for families and value

Suite hotels, free parking, indoor pools and rates that often land 25–35% under downtown for the same brand. The trade-off is a fifteen-minute drive to everything worth seeing — fine if you were going to drive anyway.

What to watch on dates

  • Iowa State Fair (mid-August) — the whole metro sells out and prices double. Book months ahead or pick another weekend.
  • Drake Relays (late April) — same effect, smaller scale.
  • Iowa Cubs home stands and arena concerts — check before assuming a random Tuesday is cheap.
  • Winter — the cheapest months by far, and the skywalk makes Downtown genuinely comfortable.

Parking, honestly

Downtown hotels usually charge $12–$25 a night for a garage. East Village street parking is free evenings and Sundays. West Des Moines parking is always free. Factor it into the nightly comparison before you decide downtown is worth the premium.
