Things to Do in Des Moines: A Weekend Itinerary That Actually Works

Des Moines is the easiest big-feeling small city in the Midwest: two hours from Omaha, three from Kansas City, and compact enough that a single downtown parking spot covers most of a weekend. Here is the order we'd do it in, starting Friday afternoon.

1. Pappajohn Sculpture Park

Free, open all day, and genuinely world-class: roughly two dozen large works spread across four blocks of downtown lawn. Thirty minutes is enough, an hour if the light is good. It is the single best free thing to do in the city.

2. The East Village

Independent shops, coffee, cocktail bars and restaurants packed into a handful of blocks below the capitol. It is where you should eat at least twice. Park once on Locust or E Grand and walk.

3. Downtown Farmers' Market (Saturday, May–October)

Around 300 vendors across the Court Avenue district. Get there by 8am if you want breakfast without a line, and bring cash for the smaller stands.

4. The Iowa State Capitol

Five domes, the largest covered in real gold leaf, and free weekday tours. Even if you skip the interior, the lawn is the best skyline view in the city — go at sunset.

5–10. The rest of the shortlist

• Des Moines Art Center — free admission, three landmark buildings, one very good permanent collection.
• Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden — the reliable rainy-day backup, ten minutes from downtown.
• Gray's Lake Park — a two-mile loop with the postcard skyline view and a lit bridge after dark.
• Iowa State Fairgrounds — worth a walk even outside August fair season.
• Court Avenue — the late-night bar district; loud on Saturdays, easy on Thursdays.
• Valley Junction in West Des Moines — antiques, a Thursday summer market and a slower pace.

Getting here and getting around

Most visitors drive: I-80 runs straight in from Omaha, I-35 from Kansas City and Minneapolis. If you're flying into DSM, the airport is ten minutes from downtown and a car is worth it for anything outside the core.
