Family Road Trip Checklist: What to Pack and Book Before You Go

A family road trip goes wrong in three predictable places: the third hour in the car, the first hour in the hotel room, and the morning you're supposed to leave. This list is built around those three, and nothing else.

Before you leave: the booking list

• Hotel with free breakfast, free parking and an indoor pool — in that order of importance.
• Timed tickets for anything that sells out (zoos, aquariums, museums on rainy weekends).
• One dinner reservation per city; leave every other meal flexible.
• Downloaded offline maps and a downloaded playlist or two — rural interstate coverage is worse than you remember.
• A rough plan for the halfway point of each drive: a park, not a gas station.

The car kit

A small bin between the seats does more than any organizer you can buy: wipes, paper towels, trash bags, a spare phone cable per person, chargers, a first-aid pouch, and a change of clothes for anyone under six. Add a cooler with water and real food, and you'll stop half as often.

Screens and the third hour

Download everything before you leave — do not rely on streaming. Wired headphones for kids' devices save the whole car. Alternate: an hour of screens, then an hour of audiobook or podcast the whole family hears.

The hotel-night bag

Pajamas, toothbrushes, one clean outfit each, swimsuits on top. If the pool closes at nine and the suits are at the bottom of a suitcase in the trunk, the pool doesn't happen.

Snacks that survive a car

• Anything that isn't chocolate in July.
• Refillable bottles per person — cheaper and fewer stops than buying water.
• One 'reward' snack held back for the last hour of each drive.

The things people forget

• A power strip — hotel rooms never have enough outlets for a family.
• A nightlight for unfamiliar rooms.
• Sunscreen in the car, not the trunk.
• A laundry bag so wet swimsuits don't end up with clean clothes.
• Printed or screenshotted confirmations, in case service drops at check-in.

Where to actually go

If you're starting in the middle of the country, Omaha with kids is the easiest first trip — the zoo alone justifies the drive. Des Moines and Kansas City both work as a second stop without adding more than three hours behind the wheel.
