An hour from Omaha, which makes it the easiest add-on rather than a destination in itself. The Haymarket for Friday night, the capitol observation deck Saturday morning, then drive on. Avoid home football Saturdays unless that's the point.

5. The Loess Hills and river towns

The scenic byway north of Council Bluffs is the best drive in Iowa — bluffs, prairie and small towns. Pair it with a night in Omaha and it turns a city weekend into an actual road trip.

6. The long one: Las Vegas

Too far to drive, but a two-hour flight from all three hub cities and often cheaper than a domestic weekend closer to home once you factor in midweek room rates. Worth watching fares for.
