Kansas City sprawls across two states, so picking a base matters more here than in the smaller Midwest hubs. The good news: the free streetcar makes one narrow strip of the city do most of the work.
Downtown / Power & Light — best for events and nightlife
Walkable to T-Mobile Center, the convention space and the loudest bar district in the city, with the streetcar outside the door. Roughly $150–$260 on weekends, more when the Chiefs are home.
Crossroads — best for food, galleries and a first visit
Quieter than Power & Light, better restaurants, and still on the streetcar. This is where we'd book for a straightforward weekend.

Country Club Plaza — best for couples and shopping
The most attractive district in the city and the calmest place to sleep. The trade-off: you're off the streetcar line, so you'll drive or ride-share downtown.
Westport and Midtown — best for a night out on a budget
Bars, live music and cheaper rooms, halfway between downtown and the Plaza. Lively on weekends and easy to leave by rideshare.
Overland Park, Kansas — best value
Suite hotels, free parking, free breakfast, and rates that routinely undercut downtown by a third. Twenty minutes from everything, and the obvious pick with kids or a car.
Dates and parking, honestly
- Chiefs home games and playoff runs — the biggest price spike of the year.
- Big 12 tournament week in March and large Kauffman Center runs.
- Downtown garages typically add $20–$35 a night; suburban hotels are free.
- Ask whether your rate includes the streetcar-adjacent location before paying for downtown.
