Omaha With Kids: A Family Weekend That Actually Works

Omaha punches absurdly above its weight for families. One of the best zoos in the world, a genuinely excellent children's museum, a rebuilt downtown park with a giant slide, and short drives between all of them. Here's a two-day plan that leaves room for naps.

Saturday morning: Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

Plan four hours minimum. Start with the Desert Dome and the Aquarium while the crowd is still at the entrance, then work outward. Strollers are worth it even for kids who normally walk — the campus is enormous and hilly.

Saturday afternoon: Gene Leahy Mall and the riverfront

The rebuilt downtown park has a sculpture garden, a lagoon, a performance lawn and a slide built into the hillside that kids will do fifteen times in a row. It's free, it's shaded in patches, and it's a short walk from Old Market lunch.

Sunday morning: Omaha Children's Museum

Indoors, air-conditioned, and built for the under-eight crowd — the right call for a hot afternoon or a rainy morning. Two hours is about the natural limit.

Where to eat without a meltdown

• Block 16 — counter service, fast, and good enough that adults are happy too.
• Ted & Wally's — homemade ice cream in the Old Market; a reliable bribe.
• Lansky's or a pizza place in Aksarben Village — booths, noise tolerance, quick kitchens.
• Zoo food is fine but slow at noon; eat at 11:15 or 1:30.

Rainy-day backups

Lauritzen Gardens' conservatory, the Durham Museum inside the old Union Station, and the Bob Kerrey bridge on a dry-but-grey day. All three work with a stroller.
