Vegas Beyond the Strip: Downtown, the Arts District & the Locals' Side

The most interesting Las Vegas isn't on the boulevard anymore. Where locals actually eat, drink and go out — half a day and one evening that will change how you see the city.

Ask anyone who lives in Las Vegas where they spend a Saturday night and almost none of them will say the Strip. The city's real momentum has moved downtown and into the neighborhoods around it — cheaper, weirder and more interesting. You need half a day and one evening to see it properly.

The Arts District — afternoon

Eighteen blocks of murals, vintage shops, breweries and galleries just south of downtown. This is where Vegas keeps its actual culture: antique malls the size of aircraft hangars, cocktail bars in converted warehouses, and First Friday art walks that take over the neighborhood monthly. Start on Main Street and wander.

Fremont East — dinner

The blocks east of the canopy are the best eating in the city per dollar: chef-driven spots that would hold their own in any major food city, at prices the Strip gave up on years ago. Make a reservation for the well-known ones; the walk-in gems cluster around the side streets.

Fremont Street Experience — after dark

Five blocks under a 90-foot LED canopy, free concerts on multiple stages, the SlotZilla zipline overhead, and the oldest casinos in the city holding the corners. It's loud, chaotic and completely free to walk. Drinks run half of Strip prices; the people-watching is priceless.

If you have one more hour

The Neon Museum's boneyard of retired Vegas signs is downtown's best ticket — book the evening tour when the restored signs are lit. Then finish the way you started: with something the Strip can't do, at a price the Strip wouldn't believe.
