Most families come to Omaha for one reason, and it has a Desert Dome on the roof. The good news: you don't have to stay next door to the zoo. Nothing in Omaha is far from anything, and the smarter play is usually a suite hotel 8–12 minutes away with free parking and a pool.
What actually matters when booking
- Suite or connecting rooms — a separate space after bedtime is worth more than proximity.
- Free parking — downtown hotels frequently charge for it; midtown ones usually don't.
- Breakfast included — you want to be at the zoo gate at opening, not hunting for pancakes.
- Indoor pool — the reliable end-of-day reset after five miles of walking.

Our picks
Residence Inn Aksarben Village is the practical winner — kitchens, laundry, free parking, eight minutes to the gate. Midtown Crossing hotels put you closest with restaurants downstairs. If you want the nicest room and don't mind the extra five minutes, the Kimpton Cottonwood in Blackstone is the one.
Doing the zoo without the meltdown
Buy tickets ahead. Arrive at opening. Do the indoor exhibits — Desert Dome, Kingdoms of the Night, Aquarium — first while it's quiet and cool, then work outward. Bring the stroller even if you think you're past it; the site is hilly and much bigger than it looks on the map.
