Lincoln

A capitol tower, a brick warehouse district, and 90,000 people in red on game day.

13 vetted places · 6 neighborhoods

Lincoln is the easiest small city weekend in Nebraska: the Haymarket puts restaurants, bars and a ballpark inside a few walkable blocks, the State Capitol is genuinely one of the great American buildings, and the whole downtown sits within a mile of the university. It's 55 minutes from Omaha, which makes it a natural add-on trip — or a cheaper base on a football weekend when Omaha rooms spike.

Best time to visit

September through early November if you want the game-day atmosphere, or late April through June for patio weather without the crowds. Avoid booking last-minute on any home football Saturday.

Getting around

Lincoln Airport (LNK) is 10 minutes from downtown, and Omaha's Eppley (OMA) is under an hour by car. Downtown, the Haymarket and the university are walkable; everything else is a 10-minute drive.

Local tips before you book

  • Check the football schedule before you book

Home game weekends double hotel rates and fill every downtown restaurant. Either lean into it or avoid it entirely.

  • Stay in the Haymarket

Restored warehouses, the arena and the best restaurants are all within four blocks. You won't need the car after you park.

  • The Capitol tour is free

Go up to the 14th-floor observation deck for the best view in the city, and don't skip the mosaic floors on the way.

  • Ride the Jamaica North Trail

A converted rail line running south out of the city — flat, shaded and easy on a rented bike.
